The tradition of Christmas Stockings
The tradition of Christmas stocking apparently came from a wealthy and kind nobleman who was upset over his wife’s death and wasted all his money. As the family had no money left his three daughters had no dowries and would not have been able to marry and we destined to become spinsters. Aparently Saint Nicholas heard of this dilemma and as was his generous nature, he had to help. As he did not want anyone to know who was helping them he rode a horse past the daughter’s home and threw purses containing gold coins (for the girl’s dowries) down the chimney. The girls had hung their washing (including some stockings) over the chimney to dry and the stockings caught the purses on their way down the chimney. Thus the tradition of hanging stocking up on the chimney and Santa Claus coming down the chimney to deliver the gifts was bornChristmas stocking stuffers
